Will Boiler Servicing Keep Your Manufacturer's Warranty Valid?

Will servicing keep my manufacturer's warranty valid?

Usually, regular servicing is one of the conditions attached to a boiler manufacturer’s warranty. The important detail is that a service does not automatically protect the warranty on its own. The boiler must also have been installed correctly, maintained in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and serviced in a way that can be evidenced.

That distinction matters if you need to make a warranty claim later. A service visit is not simply a tick in a diary. It should create a clear record that the appliance was inspected, safety tested and maintained appropriately for its make and model.

For an overview of what our service includes, see our Boiler Servicing service page.

Your boiler’s make and model affect the requirements

Warranty conditions vary between manufacturers and appliance ranges. The relevant requirements may include the interval between services, the type of engineer carrying out the work, the checks recorded and the documentation retained after the visit.

The boiler’s age and installation history can also affect what happens when a claim is made. A newer appliance may still be within its manufacturer warranty, while an older boiler may have different cover or no remaining warranty protection. If the boiler has been altered, relocated or connected to a changed heating system, those details may also be relevant.

Before we service a boiler, it is useful to know the make, model and any warranty information you have available. This helps ensure the service is considered against the appliance rather than treated as a generic inspection.

The service record is part of the protection

Keep the service report, not just the booking confirmation. A proper record should identify the appliance and document the checks carried out. It may also note any defects, recommendations or safety concerns found during the visit.

This paperwork gives you evidence of maintenance if the manufacturer asks for it. It can also help a future heating engineer understand what has already been checked, particularly if the boiler develops a fault and the issue is unrelated to routine servicing.

If you have lost earlier records, do not assume the warranty has definitely been cancelled. Contact the manufacturer or check the warranty documents to find out what evidence they require. A heating engineer can explain what is found during the current service, but only the manufacturer can confirm how it will assess a particular claim.

A service cannot cover an installation problem

Servicing checks the condition and operation of the boiler. It does not rewrite the history of the installation. If a warranty claim relates to incorrect pipework, unsuitable system components, poor installation practice or unauthorised changes, the manufacturer may examine those issues separately from the service record.

This is why the appliance and the wider heating system need to be considered together. A boiler can appear to operate normally while the surrounding system has problems that affect performance or reliability. Water quality, circulation, controls, the flue (the boiler’s exhaust) and system pressure can all be relevant when investigating a fault, depending on the boiler and installation.

We will not describe a service as a guarantee that every future claim will be accepted. Our role is to carry out the appropriate checks, record what we find and explain any issue that could require further attention.

What happens if the service identifies a concern?

A service may find that the boiler is operating safely but has wear, contamination or another issue that should be monitored. It may also identify a fault that needs repair before the appliance can continue to operate safely.

Those are not the same as a failed warranty. The finding should be explained clearly, with the evidence recorded. If repair work is recommended, ask whether the issue appears connected to a covered component, the installation or general wear. The manufacturer’s warranty terms remain the deciding authority, but a detailed service record gives them better information to assess the situation.

Do not ignore a safety concern simply because the boiler is still within its warranty period. Warranty cover is not a substitute for safe operation, and continuing to use an appliance with a serious defect can create additional damage or disruption.

What you should check before the visit

Have the following information ready:

  • The boiler manufacturer and model
  • Any warranty registration details or installation paperwork
  • Previous service records
  • Details of repairs, replacement parts or changes to the heating system
  • Any fault codes or operating problems you have noticed

You should not remove the boiler casing or attempt specialist boiler, gas or electrical checks yourself. These checks require the right training and equipment. We are Gas Safe Registered and hold Vaillant Approved and Baxi Installer credentials, allowing us to work with the relevant manufacturer information when servicing suitable appliances.

At McGrath Heating Services Ltd, we service boilers across Greenwich, Blackheath, Charlton, Welling and surrounding areas. If you want to protect your maintenance record and understand the condition of your boiler, contact us on 07812 739696 or info@mcgrathheatingservices.co.uk to arrange a service.
